The term "sock hop" was coined when the dances would take place in the gym of the high schools in 1948,1950 and 1960. The dancers would remove their hard soled shoes to protect the varnished floor of the gymnasium and dance the hand jive and lindy hop in their socks. Hence the term sock hop.
